Frequently asked questions

The Basics
What are the costs?  There are no costs for students studying with the Distance Learning Project (DLP). We provide either the online curriculum or workbooks for free to students throughout Pennsylvania.

Who will be my teacher?  Our team of distance learning instructors are a hard-working group of experienced adult-education teachers. Students are matched up one-on-one with a teacher while they study a single subject. Your teacher might sometimes change when you move on to studying a different subject.
Classes
What can I study? We have classes to prepare students for the High School Equivalency test or for higher level tests like college placement exams. We also offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for people who want to improve their speaking, listening, and writing skills in English.

I already have my High School Equivalency or high school diploma. How can I prepare for my future?  You can study one of our "Transitions" classes to prepare for a specific college placement exam.
Studying
How much time does studying take? We ask that our students are ready to study for about five hours per week. That way you are completing assignments each week and you continue to move through the classes toward your goal.

Do I have to go anywhere? These distance learning classes can be done from home. You will study on your own with the support of a teacher. There is never any need to go anywhere to attend class. However, part of the application process involves going to your local agency to take a pre-assessment test.

Why do I have to take an assessment?  The assessment that you take when you apply gives the DLP an idea of your abilities as you begin studying. It helps us place you in a class that will help you the most.

Can I take the assessment from home?  No, the assessment has to be taken in person at your local agency.
Taking the High School Equivalency Test
How long before I can take my High School Equivalency test?  When you choose to take the High School Equivalency test is still up to you. Some students only need to brush up on their Math skills before they feel ready; others want to study all of the subjects. As you work through our classes you can talk with your teacher about how prepared you are to go take the tests.
Requirements
Do I need a computer? To study our online classes, yes, you will need a computer. Our ESOL classes are only offered online, so those students must have a computer. But our classes can also be taken as "workbook" classes instead which does not require you to have a computer.

What do I need in order to study online? To take our online classes, all you need is a computer with a reliable internet connection so that you can get on the internet and check email.
